THE OLD LADY WHO INVENTED GOITH – the debut novel from Mick Mercer

Having written about Goth since it began, with a past in fanzines (starting in 1976) and music journalism, I guess it isn’t surprising what lies at the heart of my first novel, THE OLD LADY WHO INVENTED GOTH, but this is not a typical book. For a start the first edition is illustrated in a new way for a novel, while the story is a prequel to what we know and understand. 100 years ago Hermione M. Lee wanted what we have now, but it simply didn’t exist. As she was just fourteen, and a surprisingly foul-mouthed child, with The Great War brewing quietly in the distance there wasn’t a great deal she could do about it, or anything. That never stopped her trying, from the moment she found creativity crackling beneath her fingernails and in a busy life Hermione was rarely inert for long. A champion of darkness, and yet a vanquisher of gloom, Hermione M. Lee is a Gothic blueprint in action, living a life steeped in sin and intrigue, but justifiably so.

Mermaid and gypsy reading tomorrow, 7pm, March 30th, at Left Bank Books [29 Mar 2011|07:07pm]

carolynturgeon
Hello St Louis goth community! I'm going to be reading at Left Bank Books tomorrow evening at 7pm from my new book, MERMAID, which is a retelling of the original little mermaid story by Hans Christian Andersen. Which is weird and beautiful and dark and does not contain even one singing crab. The book is set in medieval Scandinavia, with all kinds of icy seas and dark convents and castles, and I think you'll like it.

I will be reading with my good friend Jeanine Cummins, whose first novel, THE OUTSIDE BOY, about an Irish gypsy boy, came out last summer. Jeanine's first book, A RIP IN HEAVEN, was a bestseller and about a terrible crime that happened in St. Louis some years back.

We have both come all the way from New York, so please come see us! We will also be reading together Thursday night at the St. Charles Library.

Love
Carolyn

The Goblin Ball is back... [15 Oct 2010|12:32am]

kukla_tko42
The (semi)annual Goblin Ball is this Saturday, October 16th!

Starting at 4pm, the Goblins will gather with the Faeries to dance the night away and celebrate the turning of the seasons.
The Faerie Queen, Mab, will lead activities and dancing at Virginia Bira Park in Vinita Park, MO. There will be treats to share and amazing music provided by [info]harmfulguy.

Shortly after darkness falls, Queen Mab will lead everyone to the Magical Mint Cookie House for the costume contest with prizes including CASH!

After the Costume Contest, the crown of the Faerie Court will be ceremonially passed to the King of the Winter Court of Faerie. Then there will be games in the back yard until around 10pm.

There will also be items for sale as well as a Raffle!

For more information (and a MAP!) click here.

The event is free, and kid-friendly. Bring the family, wear your best costume or finery, and don't forget your mask!

Salem, Massachusetts - Witch City - annual Vampire's Masquerade Ball oct 22nd! [13 Sep 2010|01:35pm]

addambombb
Don't come to this party - become a part of this event. Indulge! Become who are in your deepest imaginings, the dark and carnal creature in you that craves an experience beyond the five senses...

This year's Ball is unprecedented - dispose of any preconceived notions. Our team has spent the last year planning to make this the best Vampire's Masquerade to date! There has truly been nothing of this description in the Northeast US... the lines between theater and dance party are blurred, the environment is completely transformed, and the lighting and sound will be truly magnificent (exceeding any goth club in the region)!

This will be a truly unforgettable evening, even for the most cynical and jaded partygoer (of which i am one). Dress excessively impressively, as there will be a professional film crew documenting the brouhaha, and as always a $500 cash prize for the most provacative costume!

Following actual requests from America I have done a couple of new Goth photo books, currently only in the US Letter size, of CHRISTIAN DEATH, posed in 1984, and DANIELLE DAX, posed in 1983. Although my website was updated recently these are too new to have been included, as is the ALIEN SEX FIEND 1984-1985 one. Full details for all of these behind the cut, along with masses of covers.

BATCAVE BOOKS x 10

The publisher I use is offering free shipping in America until June 30th so I thought I’d pop this up here in case it benefits you. These are cheap books on gloss paper, featuring individual gigs from the Batcave. These have appeared in the Batcave compendium books I do (on 55# weight matt paper), but these are on 80# weight paper, 6.1” x 9.2”, done saddle-stitch, magazine style, with a lovely feel and using the full colour printing process. Although they remain black and white photos, the inks used ensure more vibrant detail comes through in the images. All covers, details and urls behind the cut.

HEX FILES: Resurrection update

I have deleted the earlier post because people have asked for more specific details of contents so behind the cut of this trimmer update you can see how many photos have been added, and of whom, which should prove easily enough why this is the biggest book ever published on Goth, with the American and UK sections now individually bigger than the original book was.
(*Someone that just ordered it tells me Lulu – the publisher - are offering free shipping within America through the Summer.)
